Teachers
Hiring: We hire several times a year. Applicants are interviewed by telephone.
Teachers are usually hired three months before their starting date to allow for visa and immigration processing, which must be completed before you depart for Japan.
Successful candidates: We are looking for personable, enthusiastic and adaptable people, individuals with good social skills. For example, if you cannot make small talk in a social setting, you are going to have trouble teaching others to do so!
Our best teachers are full of energy and excitement about working overseas. They are interested in learning and processing new information. They are natural optimists and positive about new situations. They are culturally sensitive and learn quickly that 'when in Rome, do as the Romans do'! If your friends and family would characterize you as shy, set in your ways, rather negative or narrow-minded, this job is not for you.
Teacher Requirements: Japan immigration requires English teachers to have completed an undergraduate degree, in any discipline, as well as 12 years of schooling in English. You will need a valid passport, the original university degree or an original copy of the degree with an original letter from the unversity stating that you did graduate from their institution and additional passport photos in order for us to have your working visa processed.
Working Attire: North America has become very casual with regard to business attire; this is not the case in Japan. If you join James English School, you will require a professional working wardrobe.
Men: Business suits (at least 2) these can be two-piece but NOT pants and sports jacket, conservative (white or pin-striped) shirts and ties.
Women: Business suits. Women have more flexibility in that they can 'mix and match' but suits should be conservative, standard skirt and jacket with several blouses. Female teachers wear stockings all year.
Western people tend to be larger than Japanese, and teachers should bring sufficient clothes for at least a year of work. Comfortable, but professional walking shoes are necessary for all teachers.
